Can you imagine going to a concert in the grounds of a medieval castle?, Learn Highland dances?, revive the old informal traditional games?…

These below are some of the festivals with more personality in the Sierra Norte, some seek to restore and maintain traditions of festive music and dance, others claim the permanence of old trades such as grazing or agriculture.

LA VAQUILLA

This Festival is held in the framework of two EIDS:

  • The Heifer of the feast of San Sebastián, Braojos de la Sierra, Canencia, Navalafuente, Navarredonda and San Mamés in January
  • The Heifer's Carnival, Braojos de la Sierra (Shrove Tuesday), Canencia, Puebla de la Sierra (Saturday's Carnival), El Berrueco (Carnival), El Atazar (Carnival) and Valdemanco (Monday and Tuesday of Carnival).

REPICANDANZAS. (1weekend of July)

Meeting of music and Spanish folk dance, annual and itinerant, It is celebrated in the villages of Montejo, Pradena del Rincon and Puebla de la Sierra, alternating each year in one of the three towns. The authenticity of the event takes on even more relevance in the incomparable setting of the Sierra del Rincón.

Throughout the day there are various activities: music workshops, dance and traditional clothing, craft market, popular food, parades and round, display of traditional dances in the hands of local and national groups and folk music concerts.

FEAST OF THE BUT COLLECTION. La Hiruela. October, though the date varies according to the ripening of fruit.

This celebration is an enhancement of agricultural culture and a recognition to the quality of the small local productions of the Sierra del Rincón, that it promotes conservation and crop and thereby increase agricultural genetic diversity. TRADITIONAL BRAOJOS. Last week-end of may

MADARCOS, YESTERDAY AND TODAY. First weekend of October.

Days of meeting and recovery of traditions. Throughout the day several workshops are held: preparation of garrotas, Beeswax candles, wool yarn, demonstration of threshing with yoke of cows, traditional pastries, construction of instruments, Honey extraction, crochet, leather... Also many moments dedicated to the music and traditional dance.

LIVING NATIVITY SCENES. Buitrago del Lozoya and El Berrueco.

One of the most striking celebrations each year attracts many visitors to the towns of Buitrago and El Berrueco. CORPUS CHRISTI. Torrelaguna.

Every year Torrelaguna celebrates the feast of Corpus Christi decking its main streets with striking floral carpets. Neighbors and associations are responsible for preparing them with salt painted different colors and flowers, Besides drawing different centers of flowers and wrought iron crosses.

MEDIEVAL FAIR. Buitrago. Beginning of September.

The medieval village of Buitrago surrounded by imposing walls, declared a historic-artistic site, It is the perfect setting for the Medieval fair every year at the beginning of September attracts Buitrago to a good number of artisans to sell their products. To do this, the streets are adorned, shows consistent with the medieval-themed as falconry are held, display of costume and weaponry or medieval troubadours who tell their stories to children and adults participating.

SHEAR. Puebla de la Sierra. 1weekend of June.

Special mention deserve the holidays that revolve around the recovery of Highland customs and old crafts, notably in recent years the feast of shear. Livestock tracks and the transhumance are very present in the Sierra Norte de Madrid for centuries. One of the most deeply-rooted traditions related to both, is the sheep shear. This activity is essential in the care of livestock and requires enormous skill and dedication to carry out. The Festival which is held in the recreational area La Tejera hosts activities such as: demonstration of shear, popular stew, performances for children and adults, traditional dances and concerts.

THE TRADITIONAL SLAUGHTER PARTY. Garganta de los Montes.

The massacre is one of the traditions more deep-rooted and centuries-old from across Spain. However, It has been lost with the passage of time and the migration that occurred in rural areas to the city.
Order to show how the killing, his laborious process and its enormous importance for generations and generations, Garganta de los Montes celebrates the feast of the traditional slaughter at the beginning of December.

DAY OF THE SIDEWALK AND THE VILLA. Villavieja del Lozoya. Mid-June.

On this day, life will be displayed, the environment and the people who inhabit a mountain rural municipality. Through activities organized around the nature, culture and anthropology can be seen some of the most interesting places of Villavieja del Lozoya. Paths are made, visits to the municipality and an emotional journey exhibitions spaces, that made the village elders telling their experiences by traditional spaces, as laundry, forge or the bread oven, giving a view different and nearest to the life in the village.
